I can purchase some Alpine newts from a breeder near me however they have two different species; Ichthyosaura alpestris apuana (Italian Alpine Newt) and Ichthyosaura alpestris alpestri (Alpine Newt). What is the difference between them?

They are subspecies, basically the same animal who have evolved in different areas of europe, they display different physical characteristics and though they can coexist happily in the same tank they will hybridise. Best to keep them separate.

Are there any major differences colour wise or in appearance? Just one type is quite a bit more expensive than the other :S

I. alpestris apuanas do well kept aquatic all of the time. I. alpestris alpestris juveniles want to go to land as soon as they metamorphose and go back to water at near adult size.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
