Hi guys! This is my 3 1/2 month old axolotl Nova! Her gills seem to look a little "not fluffy" and I don't know if I should be worried or if this is normal. I'm a first time owner and did a lot of reasearch before getting her but still don't know if she looks "normal". Her water is perfect, I test it almost every day because I'm paranoid, and she is eating perfect and is pretty active when she isn't chilling in her plants. She doesn't show any signs of stress and maybe I'm being paranoid but do her gills and head look normal?

They look just fine to me, no curling, plenty of filaments and a good color.

Some of it comes down to genetics. Maybe her gills will fluff up in time, but her gill stalks are pretty long so that dilutes the effect a bit. They look healthy in any case. You're doing just fine : )

The gills look perfectly healthy to me. If I recall correctly gill size can change depending on oxygen levels in the water, but that's normal.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
