It depends on what type of aquascaping you want to do in your tank. Are you planning to make different multiple levels or a plateau? A good rule of thumb to start, for just covering the bottom of a tank is 1 lb per gallon. I recently bought a 50 lb bag of sand for my 50 gallon tank. It had a foot print of 36" x 18" and I had about 0.75-1" thickness of sand with a little raised area in the corner.
Hope that helps!

Axies can eat substrate to their detriment. What kind of substrate is it? They actually don't even need substrate.
