I recently found 3 eggs attached to some plant leaves in my ribbed newt tank. I was pretty surprised as I only have two newts, one adult female and one much smaller ribbed newt whos sex is still unconfirmed. Im not even sure if he/she is of breeding age yet as I've only had it for 5 months and its only about 3.5 inches long with no nuptual pads. Anyway just in case, I've removed the eggs and moved them to a nursery tank. But I'm just wondering if ribbed newts will lay an infertile batch without actually breeding with a male?

Yes, infertile eggs are laid sometimes. It's nothing to worry about. Though it is unlikely a female would lay a whole batch without even courting with the male.

Breeding is fast and can be hard to miss. There is a possibility that one is a male. Otherwise I have had instances were a female ribbed newt lays eggs with no male in the tank. Of course these eggs were infertile and rotted after a couple days. Hope this helps.

ok thanks for the replies. Its looking like the eggs are infertile now, starting to go mouldy so was probably an infertile batch, :(

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
