Can't tell wether this nearly 3-month old Dobrogicus is male or female. It has a slightly swollen cloaca but doesn't differ a lot from the females, and his head is slightly more shaped like that of a male.

Can anyone help me out and maybe post some pics of animals at a similar age?

thank you and sorry for poor picture quality,

Joop

In my experience it's hard to tell the gender at this stage, unless there's an obvious crest or eggs are layed. Dorsal lining or the colour of the tale doesn't guarantee anything. I've had an animal which looked like a female, until it developed a crest after three years. I've had a specimen with a swollen cloaca which had to be a male for sure, which started to lay eggs.

Allrighty then, guess im just gonna have to wait and see! Thanks for the reply.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
