I came across a fifty five gallon tank that was too good of a deal to pass up, but we later learned the Axolotls prefer a lot more floor space. So we came up with the idea of a second floor.

The holes are five inches in diamater and the rocks are stuck with aquarium safe silicon. The shelf is also easily removable for cleaning and whatnot.

My question is: Do you think they will have the intelligence and ability to navigate through the holes?
Please keep in mind, we will be monitoring the Axolotls for a few days to make sure they are able to navigate through the entire tank and if they can't figure out the holes, we will remove the shelf.

Thanks guys! ☺

It will work out fine. The axolotls will probably learn to go holes. Unless the water is stagnant and poorly oxygenated the axolotl will not have to go up for air. ObliviateNox, You could put a air bubbler down in the bottom floor just to help keep the bottom water oxygenated.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
