I noticed today that my axolotl, Yoshi, has dark flecks on her body and face. She's almost 5 now, and I never noticed these before. I thought they were dirt, but when I lightly tried to wipe them off, they wouldn't budge. Are these something to be concerned about? I am behind on cleaning her tank (was planning on doing it tonight) so could that have something to do with it? She's eating fine and acting normal. Any advice?

She is fine. My Lucy developed freckles too. It is a common thing and completely harmless. It is a sign of beauty in some countries . At least that's what my dad always said about mine. I like them a lot more on my axolotl than myself.

Thank you! That makes me feel much better :). It just seemed so sudden that they showed up; guess I need to pay more attention to details XD

As far as I can tell, this is completely normal. A lot of axies develop freckles like that. You have no reason to worry :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
