I first noticed my axolotl had some discoloration on its gills a few hours ago but didn't think much of it. Now there is tons of white looking fuzz on its gills. When he shook his head, it all floated off (like his gills are falling apart) and is all around the tank. It looks like a fungal infection to me, but I am not sure 100% sure. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm very stressed at the moment. I included some photos (on the link below), let me know if it works. In the attached album I included a photo from this morning, so you can make a comparison. Do I give him a salt bath? If so is aquarium reef salt okay??? Should I also change the water?

I'd say it's fungus. I'd do a salt bath and use q tips to gently and manually help the fungus off the gills.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
