Default Favorite type of filter?

What's everyone's preferred type of filter? I currently have a sponge filter and was contemplating getting a canister for my 40 gal. Wanted your opinions on the types before I chose. Thanks!

I use sponge filters for tanks with low stock levels and plenty of live plants, they are also invaluable for tanks containing larvae or species that are upset by water currents.
As long as you diffuse the current from the return/spraybar external canister filters are a better bet for messy feeders/poopers like Axolotls.
I've used many different brands of canister filters over the years and for me eheim are the best. As long as they are cleaned out regularly, they seem capable of running constantly for many years without any significant wear, the only exception being the lid clips on the ecco and ecco pro range. Although they cost more to buy than most other brands, spares are cheaply available via ebay or an eheim dealer if anything does break or wear out.
Hope this helps. :)

I use the run of the mill internal filter and replaced the sponge with Seachem Matrix. Apparently it has a larger surface area than sponge filters or coils. I've never really looked into it but decided to give it a go and it seems to working more or less like sponge!
