Red Marbled Newt?

That is truly a remarkable animal. What does it say under the pic?
 
It is not very common, but I have seen it in the wild sometimes. The red/orange is mainly visisble in the crest or in the dorsal stripe in female, which is always orange tot red in wild animals, but in captive animals mostly yellow...
I think it has to do with food (crustaceans), which also shows in other newts which have red-ornage bellies in the wild, but yellow ones in captivity.
 
That's interesting, so what you say is that you could alter their crest color if you have the right food? Which crustaceans would that be?
 
I don't know if it is possible to alter the color of crests, but I know for sure that coloration of bllies and dorsal stripes is influenced by the food items larvae had had. If you feed your Triturus larvae with f.i. Daphnia they will get nice orange bellies. If you only feed them with Tubifex and Mosquito larvae they will get yellowish colors.

p.s. There was written someting on Cynops belly coloration somewhere on this forum a few weeks ago on this subject..search there.
 
Very interesting, Sergé. If I ever have marmoratus offspring, maybe I'll test this by growing them up in different tanks with different foods.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
