I came across this nice figurine today:

7539.jpg

It accompanied an excellent picture book on A.japonicus, published earlier this year by Shogakukan, Inc.

Here's one of the amazing pics in it:

Can you give us any other information on this picture book? ISBN#, etc..? Do you know of any place online to purchase it? I have had good luck with Amazon.jp, but the site is difficult to navigate for and English speaker.

Thanks!

This is a Japanese comic book series about Sun-chan, a 100-year-old tobacco-smoking, liquor-drinking giant salamander brought home to keep as a family pet:

I don't see an ISBN code on my copy. Actually I should have said "booklet" as it's only 35 pages. It's No. 35 in a series about Japanese animals that have been designated as Special Natural Monuments.

You can see the booklet's cover and more pics of the figurine at this site:

(not the publisher)

Here's the publisher's English website:

http://www.shogakukan.co.jp/english/index.html

(though I didn't see the booklet listed)

Here's the page for the series as a whole on the publisher's Japanese website:

And here's the page for No. 35:

Here are a couple more figurines, which are usually sold here for kids together with chocolate inside a plastic "egg":

Tim how much is the figure/booklet in the first picture?

~Aaron

Heya Aaron, it's 810 yen ($7.35) plus tax. There was only one copy at the store I bought mine at but it should be available from the publisher.

This illustration is from Fauna Japonica, the monumental work of Philipp Franz Balthazar von Siebold (1796-1866) of Germany.

Here are a couple more from the same source:

I just love the name it used to carry -- Salamandra Maxima

Exactly how large are these things???
Looks like I'm going to have to do some research!

Holy cow!
Thanks for the link Tim. Have you ever seen one?

Elizabeth, if ever you get a chance to visit one of the few zoos in the world that house these bad boys, i highly recommend it. its awe-inspiring. and some of them are so big it looks like they might just eat the little kids that come tap on the glass! lol

By Shunzan Takagi (?-1852). Shown in Atlas Anima. Originally published in "Honzozusetsu".

Mac users (only) who are interested in having a desktop giant salamander mascot can download it from this site:

...at your own risk, of course. Also, the instructions are probably in Japanese.

You can apparently watch it feast on crabs, fish and frogs

If there was only this much interest in native salamanders in the US.....
I'm glad I don't live in Japan or I would feel compelled to buy a buch of that stuff and set up my own little "shrine" to Andrias.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
