Desmognathus brimleyorum!!! EGGS!!!!

So a couple years ago I got some brimleyorum from a Caudata.org member and shorter there-after thought I had eggs. Then I realized that the eggs might have been from a Eurycea bislineata that was also in the cage.

guess what?!?! I have eggs again and there are no Eurycea in the cage. er ... rather.. I have ONE egg. white with a greenish tint hanging under a flat rock over a mud burrow dug by the female. it is like a basket ball in panty-hose....dangling from a thread from the rock ceiling.

Only 1 egg... but NOT Eurycea. Makes me now wonder if the other clutch also was from these guys and that the Eurcyea in the tank back then was just a distraction.

In any case... COOOOLLLL

That's great! Any chance of getting a photo w/o disturbing the female too much? Does she stay with the egg?

Hey Greg,

Very cool. There are not enough breedings of Desmogs in captivity.

It is possible that the female ate most of the clutch if they were infertile or fell from the roof of the burrow.

That's awesome, i'm very interested in breeding desmogs. What's your setup like? Did you do any temperature/photoperiod cycling?

Keep us updated on any development.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
