Today while cleaning my axolotl tank I noticed that some parts of my sand (natural colored) has turned a slight blue color. I'm just wondering if this is normal or if I should do something about this. Thanks in advance.

On the surface of the sand or under the surface when you stir it?

I believe it was under the surface, but I'm not sure because I didn't notice it until after I was finished cleaning the tank and had stirred up the sand a bit in the process. But right now there a spots of this blue-purple colored sand visible on the surface in spots and also under the surface visible from the side of the tank. I don't think it's anerobic pockets because every week I stir up the sand a bit so they don't have time to form. Also from what I have read, those pockets tend to be brown in color, not blue-purple.

Just wondering how long you have had the natural sand, and whether your axie was on coloured tiny gravel/sand prior to that at any time.

The sand I have now has been in the tank for about 2 months now. It's sand bought from an aquarium shop, packaged specifically for aquariums. The axolotls are only 4 months old, and prior to this sand I had them on regular play sand. I had to change tanks as they have gotten bigger so I decided to go with aquarium sand because I didn't like the looks of the play sand I had.

*edit*
The sand I have now is made by Estes, they call it "Ultra Reef". Here http://cgi.ebay.com/Estes-White-Sand...QQcmdZViewItem
is a link with some info, it's ebay but it's all I could find. It does say marine, but on the packaging it says it can be used in both fresh and salt water.

So i siphoned out the portions of the sand that was blue in color and washed it out with hot water, and after rinsing many times the original color of the sand has been restored. I'm not sure what really caused this to happen, I'm guessing it was some form of bacteria that colonized on the sand. Everything seems fine after rinsing now.
