My karelinii have been laying for the past couple weeks and I noticed that the eggs they lay in java moss always die or break open because when the java moss is disturbed, the differnt strands of moss the egg is attached to tend to pull the egg apart. I have since removed all java moss from my tank. I was wondering if others have noticed the same thing. Also, I just wanted to put that out there as a word of warning for those who are new to breeding newts like I am.

I've used java moss for newt and axolotl egg laying with mixed results. I find that most of the axolotl and P.waltl eggs tend to not make it, but I've recieved Cynops pyrrhogaster eggs in java moss and nearly all of them survived.

thats interesting. I am of course new to this, so I can only speak for my personal karelinii. I am wondering if it works better with smaller newts who are less likely to severly disturb the java moss, ot if it could be that some species' eggs are either stronger or less sticky than triturus?

I haven't had that problem, but I usually leave the eggs/moss undisturbed. I did have that problem when I tried to use yarn as a laying substrate.

My cyanurus and marms would only lay in java moss when there was not more preferable strips or elodea. My eggs only broke at this point when my cyanurus parents would snack on them ;)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
