I've heard a lot about the ZooMed 501 canister filter, has anyone tried it out? Does it work well? I'm considering it for my 20 gallon tank for C. Orientalis and would like any feedback from anyone who has used it.

Thanks.

How tall is your 20 gallon tank?

If you do a search for "zoomed" you'll find some old discussions of this filter.

You can browse through this thread: http://www.caudata.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50033

I find the filter to work very well in ten gallon tanks and pretty well in a standard 20 gallon. Anything above that needs a different filtration system. If your 20 galon has tall sides you may consider getting the filter hanger so the hoses can reach the water. Good luck with it!!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
