pic of my new axie setup

Hi Fish, very nice set up. Only thing I would suggest is using fine sand in your tank. Those little colored pebbles are not good for your axolotls. They will swallow them and they cant digest them. It is recommended to use stones twice the size of your axolotls head.

And it was hard to see if you have hiding places for each axolotl.

Love the plants!!!

Looks good, but the gravel could definately be a problem. It's a messy job, but removing the gravel is important as it could give your axies obstructions when they swallow it (which they will from time to time). Sand is fine, or a bare tank floor is OK too. Rinse the sand thoroughly and remove your axies whilst you put it in the tank and wait for the water to clear. They can go in a bucket of dechlorinated water for a day or two whilst the water clears. Good luck.

thanks for the tips guys. im gonna buy some more rocks to make another hiding place for them and will definetley change the gravel. got some sails in there too but they are tiny, keeping the tank clean though, axies arent bothered by them.

small snails aren't a problem: have them myself :D. I suspect they provide my axies with the odd midnight snack....

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
