Please help. We have had our axel for about 2 weeks and until 3 days ago he was doing well. He then lost his three feathers/gills on the right side and is now starting to loss them on the left side. There seems to be a white fungal substance where his gills were. He has also now not eaten for two days. we took a sample of his water to the pet shop where we purchased him and they tested it saying that the water was fine.

Hi Rhys,

What temperature is the tank water? High Temperature is a main contributer to fungus.

What size is the tank? What type of filter do you have? Is the filter out take making a current in the water? Axies are stressed by water flow - stress causes fungus as well as temperature.

Did the petstore test for ammonia/nitrite? What were the readings?

Has the tank been cycled?

If he has fungus, you will need to do salt baths to treat it:

Prepare a tub (ice cream container will do) of fresh dechlorinated water: Dissolve 2-3 teaspoons of salt per litre of fresh dechlorinated water, leave axie in bath for about 10 minutes - no longer than 15 minutes though - this should be done twice to three times a day.

Cheers Jacq.
