Tiger Salamander Encloser Question

I have 2 tiger sal larvae in a ten gallon tank and plan on moving them into a 20 gallon long aquarium. Here are my questions:

1. Is a 20 gallon, long big enough for 2 tigers?
2. If I provide water, will they swim in it, walk into it and drown, or just not use it?
3. Is a earthworm exclusive diet healthy, of course dusted with supplements?
4. Will they eat freshly killed minnows and pellets?
5. What kind of substrate is the best? I have heard that peat moss is too acidic for them.
6. How deep should the substrate be? I would like to see my salamaders moving about.
7. Is vegitation needed/wanted by the sals?

Thank you for your help.

Re: Tiger Salamander Encloser Question

In the future please do not post essentially the same topic in multiple forums. I have merged the two threads.

Have you read the tiger salamander care sheet? Most of these answers can be found there.

1. Certainly nothing smaller than a 20 long for two adults.
2. A water feature is generally not necessary as long as the soil is moistened, but one can be added. Just in case.
3. Earthworms make a good diet. It wouldn't be a bad idea to supplement this with other items like crickets.
4. They probably won't eat freshly killed minnows or pellets. Some fish can cause nutritional problems when fed out often.
5. Coconut fiber, known as bed a beast or by other brand names, it comes compressed into a brick. Potting soil with no vermiculite, sterilite, or any other additives can be mixed with the fiber or used by itself.
6. I would say 4-6." Less if you provide suitable hides. Tiger salamanders are burrowing creatures and need places to hide to feel secure. Tigers also tame quite easily so they are often seen when their keeper is nearby begging for food.
7. No. Tiger salamanders would likely uproot it unless you keep it the plants in pots.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
