Мировое научное сообщество давно обсуждает вымирание земноводных, которое в массовом и угрожающем масштабе происходит практически во всех районах Земли. До недавнего времени одной из причин стремительного уменьшения численности самых различных видов лягушек, жаб и тритонов ученые считали глобальное потепление и, как следствие – повышение температуры в водоемах. Из-за этого из икринок попросту перестали вылупляться головастики.
Совсем недавно американские ученые столкнулись с еще одной причиной катастрофического вымирания лягушек. Из-за грибкового заболевания читридиомикоза с 2001 года продолжаются массовые вымирания и резкое уменьшение популяции желторотых лягушек в горах Сьерра-Невада, США. Пока ученые даже точно не знают, почему грибок приводит к смерти лягушек. Однако уже известно, что он необычайно заразен, и мгновенно распространяется по популяции животных.
Ученые пытаются понять, не способствуют ли люди нарушениям экологического равновесия, которые в конце концов привели к этой эпидемии. При этом поразительно то, что земноводные – одни из самых древних позвоночных – смогли пережить многие периоды массового вымирания животных – от эпохи гибели динозавров до ледникового периода. И если они вымрут сейчас, то это может свидетельствовать о том, что на нашей планете уже происходит очередная экологическая катастрофа. По словам руководителя научной группы Вэнса Вреденбурга, мы можем чувствовать, что на Земле все в порядке. Однако лягушки уже сигналят о том, что им плохо. И очень важно услышать их сигнал прежде, чем стало слишком поздно.
