Hey all. My gorgeous albino female has been floating for months now. Her chemistry is fine, and I have 14 other axies in the same house but in different tanks (some together, some seperate) and they all don't float and seem happy. She had a couple bad days when a house sitter unplgged the filter, but that was a long time ago. I moved her into a larger tank a month ago and still no change. She floats about 70% of the time. She still eats well and all, How concerned should I be? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Is there any water current in the tank that may be stressing her?

What sort of substrate is in her tank?

What type of test kits are you using? Test Tube or Dip Strips? If you are using Strips, the readings may be lying to you.

Fourteen other axies! My goodness, and I thought my eight were enough mouths to feed ;)

Cheers Jacq.

Thanks for the quick responses. Here's here tank. (Of course she's at the bottom when I take the picture, go figure!) Anyway, the substrate is sand-- same as other tanks, the bubble filter is as little flow as I could find and the others seem to be ok with it. I use test tubes to test my pH and ammonia somewhat regularly. Hope that helps you help me.

Oh and I lies, I have 14 total, 13 other than her. 12 are her offspring, and the other is the papa. It's nothing compared to the 100 I had in my clasroom last spring! I had to unload a lot of great axies but last I heard, all the ones my middle school students took home are doing well!

Thanks again for the help.

 naturally!

Hmmmm. Well, it's great that she is eating well - she just may be one of those 'wierd' axolotls that likes to float just for the hell of it.

You mentioned that she's been floating for 'months' - has she ever been exposed to gravel in the past which may be causing an impaction now?

Ooops, I forgot to ask about the tank temperature...what is the temp?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
