But just in case...

Probably a bad idea to keep a beta fish in the tank with my axie?

I know! All I do is panic that Squish is going to die and now I am thinking about putting a carnivorous fish in with her.

I was just wondering because my roommate and I want to get beta's together, but it would be kinda dumb to have 3 aquariums in our tiny dorm. Would it be best to just have her get one and just keep Squish on her own?

A betta is a bad idea. For the reasons you stated, and because their temperature requirements are different. Bettas can live in fairly small bowls. And you can't keep two males together (or even near each other), as they will fight.

I think this is a bad idea.

A beta/betta will likely nip at Squishy's gills. Squishy on her part will adhere to the axolotl rule "if it swims by me, and is smaller than me, it must be food!" and try to eat the beta/betta fish.

I may be wrong, but I understand that beta/betta fish prefer warmer water and become listless in cold water.

The only fish that should be kept with an axolotl are feeder fish.

I figured as much lol. For now we are thinking that she will just get one and keep it in her tank and if I decide to get one I just keep it in a bowl next to Squishy's aquarium.

Thanks for the advice as always!

Yeah the temp requirements are to extreme.

But if you really wanted a betta and are restricted on space, try wall vases. I personally don't care for them because they are just to tiny. But a lot of people swear that small is good for bettas. I prefer at least a couple of gallons for them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
