My axolotls have been eating and have a healthy appetite. However, when I drop the pellets into the tank, sometimes they are slow to get them and the pellets reach the sand, so when they do eat them they might be getting some sand into their system. This worries and I was wondering how you guys feed your axolotls?

Thanks,

Hi Oneatos,

This is nothing to worry about.

My axolotls enjoy trying to catch the pellets as they drift down and will snuffle through the sand looking for any they missed.

Sand is the recommended substrate as the axolotl passes it with ease and experiences no discomfort at the passing. The axolotl will either expell the sand through the gills (this can look a trifle bizarre) or pass it with no problems.

Thanks - I will be orbserving them very carefully... I just dont want anything to go wrong

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
