I'm trying to figure out the sex of my tiger salamander. I've read the article on the caudata culture, and understand the males have a larger cloaca and the females are larger. However, since I only have one salamander, it's hard to compare it to others?

Does anyone have pictures of a good male and female cloaca example?

Thanks!

Not handy. Do you have a photo of your salamander? Doesn't have to be great. Take a photo from above and one from the side.

If that bulge at the base of the tail in the side-on photo is not the leg on the far side of the body, it's definitely a male.

And a very pretty one at that. Where/how did you acquire it?

Thanks a lot!

I got him from one of my college professors who had bought a bunch for a herpetology class.
He's gotten a lot prettier over the last year. He was a real "ugg-o" when I first got him.

He's very unhealthy in that photo of him being "ugg-o". Do you know where your professor acquired them? Seems like the vendor needs to be named and shamed.

To be honest, I'm not really sure. It was a general lab animal vendor, and my salamander was the only surviving specimen out of 30 others. Needless to say, that was the last time my professor used that vendor.
