Just found out about Axolotls a few hours ago (they're very rare here, you'd never see one in a pet shop unless you specifically looked for one around town), and they look really neat! I'm considering investing in one, if I can take the time to.

I am currently an aquatic turtle owner, of 4 adult Red-Eared Sliders, and have been keeping RES for the past 12 years, figured it might be time to introduce something new into the house, :p . And no, I wouldn't put any salamander and turtle together, the salamander would be dead in under a minute, ;) . I know quite a bit about keeping aquatic turtles, so if any of you have any questions about them, drop me a line, as I will do the same for salamanders and newts!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
