I was driving over the new river yesterday across a heavily traveled bridge when I saw my first bald eagle (outside of a zoo) fly right in front of me. It was an incredible site. Now if I could only see a hellbender.

What is a new river?

I envy you seeing a bald eagle. I come from New Orleans and after Katrina, the usual bug-migration-bird-feeding (etc etc) patterns were so skewed that my sister had a bald eagle in her back yard! In the swamps of Louisiana, quite the rare sight. I didn't get to see that one either. The only bald eagle I ever get to see is the one on my passport. Lucky you!

The New River is the name of the river (like Mississippi). The New River is pretty ecologically important.

Since Hellbenders don't fly, I can't really see you finding one on the bridge... lol. Regarding eagles, when I was in Canada, one almost pooped on me. It was pretty gross. I haven't liked them since.

Ok since this topic is already way off to the left. Eva I thought you might want to know some more interesting facts about the New River. First, the river is actually the second OLDest river in the world, only second to the Nile. It originally flowed NORTH to the St. Lawrence River, it still flows North, just to a different location now. The New River is also the only river to cut the entire width of the Apalachian Mountains I think (I may have to double check that). So there are some usless facts about the New River which lies pretty much in Chip's back yard and I'm only about an hour away. Hellbenders here I come.:p

OK Foster, not to brag, but next time you're in GA give me a holler. I know a spot where there's a good chance of seeing a bald eagle WHILE seeing benders. I've seen them both at the same spot, just not simultaneously (yet).

I'd REALLY be impressed if I saw a bald eagle catching a hellbender. Talk about your ecological disaster... one imperiled species eating another. lol.

lol, I don't think that would be a pleasant experience for the 'bender or the eagle.

Whilst I in no way disrespect the Bald Eagle, it wouldn't hold a candle to a Hellbender sighting, in my opinion. Good luck Chip.
