Food preference?

My Tigers been on crickets for a month or so. Before then he was eating earthworms, but took ages to eat them and had to be in the water, he refused them on land. So I've tried him on them again, he bites at them but doesn't take them then won't eat unless I give him a cricket or mealworm.
I'd rather not use crickets as they're hard to gut load, expensive, and I need them for my other animals. So is there any reason he might not want these earthworms, I've tried around 4 times but still no result.
He's up at the glass begging (as usual) but won't take any worms. Anyone got any idea as to why?
 
If they are Eisenia, Dendrobaena, or whatever, they secrete an unpalatable substance that will make your animal refuse them after biting them. However they can get used to it.
You could wash them thoroughly and try again.
Another possibility is that the worms get covered in substrate when the salamander is trying to eat it. I´ve seen some of my animals spit out an earthworm because of this.

Patience, that´s the key...keep trying and bare in mind the above possibilities, you should be able to get it to eat them.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
