Hello,
My name is Declan and as the title says, I am from Dublin, Ireland. It has been quite a few years since I first kept and bred Axolotls and I still have a couple of Axolotls from Johns first breeding population when he was based in Dublin.

With a gap in actively keeping Amphibians of about 6 years, I have begun keeping amphibians again and look forward to rearing axolotls and xenopus once more.

At the moment I have 9 adult females (mixture of colours) and 3 males. I also have a small group of xenopus, whites treefrogs and about 1500l of aquariums with fish and crayfish taking up the bottom floor of my house.

I am interested to see how many amphibian keepers on the site are located in Ireland as I have noticed through my official duties and visiting pet and specialist shops that there has been a shift to larger reptile keeping from the norm.

Regards,

Declan

Good to see another newbie from the emerald isle.

Are you still living in Wexford or now in Dublin? It's good to know the axolotls are still kicking around. Did you ever find harlequins?

Every once in a while someone from Ireland posts a question but they rarely stay on the site for long. That being said, most of the people here don't actually post so it's very hard to know. As for registered people here, go to this link and select Ireland from the country pulldown:

Have you got any photos of the axolotls that came from me? I'm very curious.

Hi John,

I have a gold female, and possibly 4 melanoid females from your stock, I have a large female wildtype that originated from Heffernan (Dr Doolittles pet shop) and two or three from Patrick. I found them all when the big pond in Wexford was emptied in the back garden and I have then up in Dublin with me.

I will get around to firing off some photos of all the adults in a couple of days as I don't get much time when the kids are about. I have been mad busy sampling the East Coast inshore fish species for the las three years and also working on the alien species regs.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
