Hi All!

I'm brand spanking new to this forum...it looks like fun!!! I stumbled on it while searching for a place to get information and maybe purchase an Axolotl. I had one about 20 years ago, but I've not seen them in pet stores and thought I'd check here.

I've got several tanks - fresh water and salt - but I miss my good old Axol...maybe I can find one again in the near future!

My full-time business is glassblower; and I love to dabble in anything artistic but glass is definitely my favorite! I also do crochet in the amigurumi (Japanese in-the-round). My first published glass piece just premiered in a 2009 calendar featuring glass artists and I've just published my first unique amigurumi pattern on Etsy.

Thanks for letting me introduce myself!

Regards from CA,
DeAnne

Axolotls are illegal to own in California. Most people will refuse to ship them to Ca. or New Jersey.

Hello and welcome to the forum. You Glass blowing work sounds interesting. I'm sure that you could blow an interesting aquarium, if you desired.

I hate to burst your bubble on the axolotl. Here are some recent threads that may interest you.

In summary you'll find that the state recently banned axolotls. If you search the forum you can probably find more information about the ban.

You'll have a hard time finding an axolotl in the state, though some Internet dealers can still be found that will likely ship to the state. However, I doubt that you find anything supporting import of banned species on this website. Who wants an animal that's always hiding from the law, anyways? There are other aquatic species of salamanders that you may be interested in, though.

Edit: amigurumi - had to wiki that one. interesting.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
