In a recent cold snap, the temperatures in my animal room have really dropped and given me the opportunity to make some great observations. I didn't think the cold would be a problem for my axies and at 6c they were happy and still interested in food! They're now back up to 9c..

Lucky you !

I feel for the people in Melbourne in my own country at the moment, for the past week they have had temperatures averaging 45 degress C.

I'd be happy to meet them half way!

It took a while to get my head around the fact that my tortoises are warmer hibernating in their fridge..

Good luck to the heat-stressed axie keepers of Melbourne and their pets.

Hi Tappers,

Axolotls can handle cold very well. A keeper in the states has some in an outdoor pond which ices over in winter. So long as there is a food source they cope well.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
