My young axolotl (3 inches) is very sick. i previously had him in a 3.5 gallon with no heater on. one day he started twitching and having spasms. i put him in a new container and have placed him in the fridge since. he has a couple red specks that come and go. his back legs also seem to stick out more and he is also not eating as much. can anyone tell me what i can do to help him?
thanks

hey,

while in the fridge, he cooler temps cause your axolotl slows its metabolism (how much he needs to eat) so dont fear if his not eating alot, hi body under these temps doesnt need ase much food, this isnt to say you shouldnt put some food in there for him, a worm or two every, 3-4 days

also remember to keep some fresh dechlorinated water in the fridge, so you can do daily water changes in him tub...

i would also suggest getting a bigger thank, 10g + is bare minimum, remember, they grow, quickly.

Hi dvasq,

To help you with your axie, i need to ask a few questions as well as for you to do a few tasks.

1 - What do you feed your axolotl, how often and how much of each?

2 - What are the water parameters (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH)?

3 - What is the water temperature? Does it fluctuate drastically throughout the day?

4 - Are there any excessive water currents?

5 - Do you have any other animals in the same tank?

6 - Have you changed anything in the tank or routine care recently? Did you add a new plant or ornament etc?

7 - What substrate if any do you use?

8 - From your description, your axie displays the following signs of illness - Inappetance, intermittent appearance of red speckling, unusual behaviour (twitching, spasms, stiff hind legs). Does it have any other signs? Please be as thorough. Are there unusual growths or skin/gill discoloration? Any unusual looking faeces? Does the axie's mouth open and close rapidly like 'gurgling'?

9 - If possible, pease take some photograhs and post here.

10 - How do you perform the refrigeration?

My tentative differentials are parasitism, toxicity and neurological illness. It would depend on your answers of the above to give me a better idea, and then i can formulate some plans for you.

Cheers.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
