How old do the larvae have to be before you can sex them?

Thanks

hey,

usually when they are about 7 inches

the tips of their feet will change colour, lighter ones go dark, and darker ones their toes get lighter...

also the males get rather engoured between the rear legs...

have a look around the gallery, you may see the difference for yourself,

if your talking age wise, its really varies depending on the individual animal.

good luck

At the larvae stage, it is impossible to determine the gender of the axolotl.

The nails will darken in pale axolotls and whiten in dark axolotls to indicate sexual maturity, this usually takes place when the axolotl is about five months old.

However, it's usually it's best to wait until the axolotl is 18 months old before trying to sex it with accuracy as some males develop very slowly and can look like females. You may be lucky and the male will develop a prominant bulge in the cloaca region early on in the juvenile stage betraying his gender.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
