i just noticed that my sand is clean from it's poop, but all my plants are covered in it. i mean i noticed my axolotl swims to sit on the plants, but i mean i didn't know she poops on them on purpose, does all axolotls do that? or my axolotl just wants more attention from me by cleaning every plant in tank?
and now it seems she likes to be on plants much more than ground. : D and my plants are just COVERED with here poop.

Hi Rita,

Its unlikely that your axolotl is maliciously pooping on the plants in its tank in a deliberate attempt to increase your work load.

Axolotl faeces will break to pieces very easily as your axolotl swims and moves around the tank. The small particles will then settle on plants and the floor of the tank.

Beneficial bacteria also grows on the plant surfaces as well so when you wash them you will be removing some of this as well.

Hehe Rita,

The axie's toilet is everywhere, when they have to go, they go. You really should not clean each plant as advised by IanClick but what you can do is just use a chopstick or kebab stick etc to gently 'shake' the aquatic plants to dust off any poop sitting on the pretty leaves. You can then do your regular substrate siphoning routine. I do agree poop on leaves make not a pretty sight. I like my aquatic plants crisp and pristine.

;)

xD yea it's preaty gross, i thought of puting small snails in the tank is it ok? like really tiny ones.

Hi Rita,

Snails have pros and cons. I can't really decide for you but i can give you some ideas so you can make your own decisions.

Advantages

- Does help with removing some algae and detritus
- May even be eaten by axie as a snack
- Breed fast so you basically have an endless supply

Disadvantages

- It also does increase to bioload in your tank (produces nitrogenous wastes itself)
- Can carry parasites and diseases especially if not quarantined beforehand
- Bigger ones can cause impaction in axies when ingested. (Depends on species)
- Can ruin your aquatic plants
- Super difficult to eradicate once you introduce them into your tank

Personally i have tiny snails in my tank. Not by choice. I dislike them. :D

Cheers

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
