So for a few months I had a pair of notos in a 10 gallon tank. Now I'm looking to use the sponge filter, the java moss, and possibly the substrate for tropical fish. I know these newts are toxic, do their secretions get on the enclosure furniture? I don't want to harm the fish. I'm going to sterilize all of it with hydrogen peroxide though so bacteria and parasites aren't an issue.

Newts don't normally secrete their toxins unless they are stressed. And any toxins would be broken down in a healthy tank with plants, etc. If it were me, I wouldn't clean or sterilize anything, unless the Notos died in there and I suspected something contagious as the cause. Non-cleaning isn't because I'm lazy, it's because it preserves the beneficial bacteria and other micro-fauna that make a long-term tank a healthy place.

Great, I guess I don't have a fist sized chunk of poisoned java moss then.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
