This is my Axie, Ron!

Think its about 2-3 months old. Bearing in mind his tank state is appalling for an Axie but those of you who read my earlier post will know the circumstances. You'll all be so pleased when I show you photo's of my new tank set up very soon!!!

I'm gonna do all I can to make him happy!!

Seemed happy today, there is a little bit of white 'fluff' on the end of his gills which have been small since I got him anyway. But apart from that he seems fine, pottering about in his container and taking his usual gulps of air every now and then.

I'm feeding him once a day, a block of frozen bloodworm cube. But, you experts, should I be feeding him this much judging by his size? Or should I be feeding him more whilst he's in exclusion?

Aww he is lovely. How is the fungus and salt baths coming along?

He looks almost to be adult size, how big is he? Id say if he was over 4inches id feed him once every other day with as much blood worm as he will eat. I usually drop in one cube at a time so i dont waste any. Once they are adult size (around 8-12inches) I would start feeding him twice a week. I he is under 4 inches i would feed small amounts every day.

Hope he is getting better

Claire.

PS he is definately sexually mature as he does have the black toe tips, I would estimate he is alot older than 3 months. Possibly even over a year old depending on what length he is.

Hi Claire!

I haven't actually carried out any salt baths yet, but the 'fungus' seems to be slowly clearing itself. I wouldn't feel confident enough in myself to carry out a salt bath.

You reckon over a year old? The 'aquatic specialist:mad: ) says that he was 3 months! He must be about 4- 4 1/2 inches long at the moment. You think it's definitely male?

Cheers, Mike.

Now that you say 4-4 1/2 inches I would estimate around 5-6 months. But that will never be an indefinate age unless you know his birth date. They approximately are around 2 months when they just start getting their back legs and are only around an inch or so in length.

I would say it is male from the pics i've seen. Can you post a pic of him side on of his cloacal region?

Im pretty possitive that he's a male too. The cloaca is bigger on males and since I have both a female and male i see the resemblence pretty well. That he's thin is also an indication that he's a male

Congrats Mike, he's really cute and looks very cheeky.

I'm sure you'll be fine, especially if you refer to this site, there's always an expert on hand.

Hi Guys!

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking that he's male, he's not due to underfeeding as he's well stocked, so that would indicate that he's a laddie!

Secondly, the 'white fluff' on his gills fell off last night as I moved him to a bigger container, so I fished them out with a net and the gills look fine now! Very small, but thats how they've always been. I'm sure once I stop moving him around he can settle into his proper tank and feel more at home.

Water temperature (Which I'm changing daily) fluctuates between 16-18 degrees.

Cheers, Mike.

Hi!

He's in a small container, so I don't know if that would affect temperature, but its just kept at room. It was actually 19 degrees when I left earlier on today.

Hi Mike, i'm so glad that little Ron is getting back to his normal self, poor little laddie!! The temp he is at is perfect. My tank is usually around that temp too. It has been around 21 over the last couple of days with the warm weather though! I just keep the window open in that room all day.

Claire.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
