Hello all,

I have two questions relating to the colouration found in the "golden" axolotl Firstly, have any of you seen a golden leucistic axolotl? are they common?

secondly I have recently reared an albino with gold patterns similar to a piebald (in so far as there are large patches of gold colouration on an otherwise albino animal). Once again I would be interested to hear if any of you have seen this also?

Thanks,

Declan

Hi Declan,

I hear Golden Leucistics exist; although I've never seen one. I hear Melanoid Leucistics can look a little yellow, and wonder if the two are the same.

Do you have a photo of your Albino with gold patterns? Would love to see it mate.

Cheers, Phil

Update on post no. 3. The axolotl was left to continue to feed itself in a tank rich in ostracods and became if anything a bit deeper yellow/orange. In mid May it seemed to be dropping behind its siblings in growth and on 1 June it looked rather thin so I've moved it and fed it up on worms. It now looks healthy and is growing faster again. I think the colour is fading but it is still yellow. The colour permeates the whole animal and difffers from the yellow patches of xanthopores.

It is not melanoid or axanthic. It has shiny eyes, a few iridophores on its gills and had scanty xanthopores when newly hatched.

Ok guys, I have made an attempt to get a couple of closeup shots of both the golden leucistic and the piebald albino. The colours are much stronger than the photos would lead you to think (I must have messed up the camera settings) anyway here they are with an albino and golden albino alongside for comparison.

LOL! I have the same problem when taking photos of Axolotls :)

WOW! Nice colours - he does look Golden Leucistic as you suggest.
As for your Piebald Albino; great markings - could he be Melanoid Albino? I have a young one sort of the same, just waiting for the transparent bits to either go white or peachy coloured.

Wow they are stunning. Is this the first time you have these two colours in your stock? Do you intend to try breed from them?

I found often in my stock that these xanthic looking leucistics developed into normally colored leucistics (all white), sans freckles, once they reached breeding age.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
