Hi,

I have my axolotl miniziller.

Soon i will have 2 more. This will make 3 juveniles and in 4 months(christmas) im getting a 3ft tank so they will have enough space even when adult.

Buy anyway back to the question... I'm one for listening to loud music... death metal, viking metal, rock ect and i was wondering does my axolotl care about the music? he is about 1.2m from my speakers and they are loud...

He hasnt had any reactions of such or anything buy so certain notes or certain amounts of bass of anything scare them?

Or do they have bad hearing?

A 3 foot tank is the bare minimum for 3 adult axolotls. You should think about a bigger tank. The larger the tank, the easier it is to control water quality and provide adequate hiding spots.

Given that axolotls lack ears, I'd say their hearing is rather poor. There have been other threads about axolotls and music. I suggest doing a search and reading through those threads.

Hi kaysie,

Thanks for the info yeah theyre only about 3-4inches long each at the moment.

Next christmas I will upgrade to 5.5ft :) going to be sweet.

Hope my axolotls like the new tank when i get it.

Even though axolotls don't have ears and can't hear in the sense we hear they do have a lateral line that picks up the vibrations from the speakers. The vibrations is what will stress them.

EDIT: I found this thread that may help you or anyone else better understand it.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
