Hey i have a slight problem,

during the last couple of weeks my axie gilbert has been loosing his fluffy gills and now they are thin and stumpy.
he has now started floating and is refusing to eat. His body is extremely stiff and he is clearly not well. I have sand as my substrate so i'm doubting he has impaction.

if any one has ideas of what is wrong with him please help me?
in the mean time i will send him to the fridge :(

Fridging sounds like the best approach. I would recommend checking water parameters, looking closely at water temperature, and considering his diet.

thanks so much for your help,

unfortunately Gilbert died, not sure what was wrong with him, he looked completely normal except his stumpy gills :(

all water parameters were fine, the temp was 20 degrees and he was feed a combination of blood worms, earthworms and occasionally blackworms.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
