Hello all,

I currently live in Japan but will be returning to the USA in a few days. While in Japan I have picked up six Japanese Firebelly newts and would very much like to take them with me back to the USA.

I have contacted US Customs and the US Fish and Wildlife Service and have verified that there are no restrictions on bringing my newts into the USA.

My question is... what is the best way to transport my newts on the plane?

I will be traveling approximately 40 hours door to door. My idea is to carry them in a large, sturdy plastic bottle and filled with several layers of damp paper towels, but I don't know if they will allow this with my carry-on baggage.

If anyone had any ideas or input, I would love to hear it.

Many Thanks,
Kevin

Call the airline. You are probably right that this would not be permitted in carry-on. If you send them in checked baggage, I'd recommend getting a sturdy cooler. Pack them the way you are thinking (with some air holes in the bottle), and pack them with a room-temperature cold pack to prevent freezing.

I will do so and post here after my trip (might be a few weeks as i will be away from any type of Internet access for a while). Thanks, Kevin

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
