I got these guys on Tuesday (12/1), and I have been setting up their tank with each part I get. I had a large 18"x12" piece of driftwood shipping, and it should be here Monday, which will be a huge help so I can setup a waterfall feature. The filter is hidden behind the pile of rocks, and I need to get a background to hide the wires. I hope you like it, I know my 4 little juveniles do! I used tile as my bottom btw.

It looks great!

You don't need an 'out of water' area for axolotls though and if you fill the tank up more it'll be easier to control your water chemistry and temperature.

This is a fine example of an exemplary axolotl tank. I do agree one hundred percent with Kerry on the water depth and land area though. More water is always better and those above the surface rocks could be better utilized as more hides. More hides in the open areas will make for a perfect axolotl enclosure.

It is a breath of fresh air to see a tank that was very obviously well researched during it's assembly. I predict you will have very happy, healthy axolotls if you are vigilant in your tank maintenance and husbandry.

I plan the raise the depth of the water at least a foot when my large piece of drift wood arrives. The rocks and plants currently in place are merely for aesthetics, but when the main focus piece arrives my focus will be purely axolotl comfort. I will have little to no land space, and hides will be available when I can set up the tank as I planned. This is only the quick setup I was able to provide until I waited as UPS and the USPS took their sweet time delivering my little babies' accommodations.

That's great, It's good to see a well-informed axie owner looking out for the well-being of their animals.

Marvellous tank I must say, and some very cute axolotls in there. I especially love the last picture, I love how they can go "caving" and explore around and hide from the light at the same time =]

Well researched!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
