Unhappy Will carara gravels harden the water?

Hi there everybody! So great to find this axolotls forum. My 12 year old son, Timothy is so anxious to have axolotls, so recently we bought a 60 liter aquarium. In order to avoid axolotls to swallow the small gavels, we replaced the blue stones with carara which sized between 8-16mm. This is the only suitable size of natural gravel we can find in Brussels big aquarium shop. After aging the water in the tank for 3 days, we tested the water. It shows the water is hard - as high as 8.0 - it is about the same as our local tap water. The TH values shows also too high - this means the water is too hard. Now we are stuck here and do not know what to do . Any advise from anyone, please? Thanks, Terence

Gravel of that size can be ingested.
Have you thought about fine silicon sand?? Itīs a much better option since ingestion posses no dangers. It also doesnīt trap as much debris, and it doesnīt mess with the water parametres.
If your tap water is hard, you may want to consider using spring water.

Hi Azhael, Thank you so much to take your time replying my question on Xmas day!
Regarding your advice to use fine silicon sand. After checking on internet, do you mean silica (silicon dioxide SiO2) sand, often in the form of quartz?
Moreover, it is still winter now, so not sure my son is willing to wait till spring to get rain water. Perhaps I should consider to buy mineral water in the supermarket that has a pH around 7 to 7.5? I know it is an expensive solution.
Please advise again. Thanks & Marry Xmas!
Cheers
Terence

Yes, i meant that kind of sand. Itīs available in most pet-shops, but you may also want to look into "play sand" which is the same but cheaper. Some construction sands are also suitable.
The one thing you need to take into account is to put a thin layer of sand in the tank. Avoid depths greater than an inch, because otherwise anaerobic pockets may appear. Also, rinse it throughly before putting it in the tank.

By spring water i meant bottled water. Itīs not the cheapest option ...i know. Do not use rain water. It lacks disolved minerals, that the animals need to osmoregulate, and in same places, it can be acidic, which is dangerous or even lethal.

I use caviar gravel (pic), this is very small, and round. This works very well voor Axo's.
