Hi,
What is the lowest temperature for Pachytriton labiatus? I want to keep them outside here, in Vitoria, the Basque Country in the cold north of Spain.
Thank you very much
Best regards

as nobody knows (except he/she collected their animals in nature) where the P. labiatus are coming from that occur in pet trade, it is difficult to say what temps your animals can stand or what would be normal for them in winter.
I would recommend an ice free tank and try with 5 °C minimum.

I observed Pachytriton labiatus in Anhui province south of Wuhu and near Huangshan in small streams. water temperature 18 - 20°C in June.
I do not know the temps in winter in that specific streams but if I check msn weather forecast of Wuhu, what is nearby I see even frost (minus 3 the day after tommorrow).
I think the streams will not freeze so take care that your aquarium is not freezing.

I have 9 individuals, most from different sources, that stayed in 0-1C water for the last two months with no problems.

mine also live at british temperatures all year round ... i got them from a pet shop that had them in a tropical fish tank with angel fish of all things ! after a month of slowly dropping the temp a few degrees every 2 or 3 days , they live at temps as low as 0degrees c (air temp) .... i like my bedroom cold ;P

they still feed voraciously at this temp too by the way !

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
