Back in January the two axolotls I was "fostering" for my friend, while he was out of town, decided to have babies.

So here are the earliest pictures I took of them, taken February 12th.

they are very cute...well done....are you keeping some for yourself
lea

They are beautiful, mom and dad really nice! I'm looking forward to my two who should be arriving Wednesday! :D

I was wondering the same thing as Lea though, are you keeping any? You really had a nice diversity, I think I'd have to keep a few just to see how they turn out.

They are so beautiful :D, but are they still with their parents?
If you want to raise some larvae, you should keep them out into a separate tank/container/tupper ware, because the parents like to eat them.

Tina

I plan to keep about five of them, but I want them to be all males or all females, lol.

Here are some pics that were taken April 21st.

DO NOT keep that fish with those Axies. Plecos and other fish of that nature are armed with defensive spines that could inflict a great deal of harm to an Axolotl. The snails will also be better removed, to eliminate the chance of impaction when the axies grow larger.

Make sure you do your research before you decide to take on the responsibility of raising Axolotls.

Oh yeah, the parents are in a separate tank.
About a week before they hatched I went and bought my own 55 gallon fish tank. That way the babies could hatch and grown unharmed by their parents.
I ended up moving all of the babies 210 miles, as I ended up relocating. So the parents are with their original human and I have all of the babies, that I'm currently trying to find homes for.

These pictures were taken May 9th.
They are growing so fast!

Thank you Eric for the advise, and I do understand that an Axolotl will eat anything that will fit in it's mouth. That's why I plan on removing the snail if they fail to grow larger than their mouths. And as for the pleco, he has never bothered the axies thus far, and if he too fails to grow bigger than their mouths than I plan on removing him as well.
But thank you for the warning.

Kim

Please take out the pleco as Eric told you. It can suck at the axies sensitive coat and that could lead to bad infections.

I'm sorry to have ruffled so many feathers, and I am not about to start giving out advice to others. So I appreciate those who have given me advice, but I would like it if you didn't phrase things to make me feel like an idiot or try and force me to do things just because you said so.

All I wanted was to post some pictures of my growing axies, but maybe that was a bad idea in the first place.

I would say the "bad idea in the first place" was putting species together that shouldn't be kept together. And as far as the pleco goes..it's doesn't matter if it is larger than their mouths, the axies could still attempt to take a bite and get injured.

Here's a reference to someting similar:

http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...um/f57-axolotl-free-all/66922-stuck-fish.html

And just a little further information, plecos prefer the temperature of water in the 70-80 degree range, while Axolotls live in waters 60-66 degress...you are keeping either the plecos or axies in an inappropriate environment.

Noone here is trying to insult you or bring you down, we just want to help you provide the best care possible to your pets.

Hi Kimko86,

nobody wants you to feel like an idiot and if my post gave you this feeling, I beg your pardon. But we all wanted the best for your little pets and we have seen so much terrible photos and we only wanted to protect you and your axies from such bad experiences.

Tina

Hi Kimko86,

You are among people who are very passionate about these animals and who have also seen many mixing disasters. They are trying to help you avoid having anything happen to these beautiful babies whom you have done a wonderful job of raising.

You're right that the little cuties don't pose much of a threat to the plecostomus or the snail but your little ones are very curious about everything as I am sure you are seeing. They poke their little noses into places where they should not, this could frighten the snail into retreating into its shell and catching the little axolotl. It has happened and yes, you are fortunate that it has not happened yet. Your plecostomus is at a pretty dangerous size and could potentially kill a little axolotl if it chose to attach itself or catch a little one with one of its spurs. There have also been cases where this has happened. Nobody here wants to see anything happen to your babies and truly have only the best intentions at heart. Obviously, you have worked very hard to get them to this point.

Thank you for sharing the pics, not only have you shown us beautiful babies, but hopefully have just prevented an unforeseen tragedy. Please continue to share your pics, we'd love to see them grow up! ;)

Here is a link to what she is referring to:

Caudata.org Newt and Salamander Forum: Snails--Advice?

and I don't want it to seem like we are beating a dead horse..but he is a case in which an axie tried to swallow a cory (another bottom feeder fish), the cory put out its spines, and the axie was stabbed through its head and mouth.

It's the last sentence that offended me.

Kim

How is that offensive? You made a mistake that would have easily been avoided with a bit of research.

Ok, moving on...
Here are my latest pictures taken on may 16th.

I like to take pictures, just wish my camera was of better quality, lol.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
