I'm about to put an overheated/injured axolotl in the fridge, but the current temperature in her tank is 75 (broken water chiller), and I'll be putting her in a 40-43 degree fridge.

I'm sure the question has been asked before, but I'm not sure how to look for the answer. Will she go into shock if I just pop her straight in the fridge?

No, as the water cools down, her metabolism will slow so there should not be any real shock. You are not dunking her in ice water suddenly. Please make sure her container is secure though, there have been cases where axies have jumped out while in the fridge. Good luck!

You could also fill the container with water from your tank for a more gradual change in temp, then after a while and the water in that container is the same as the fridge, move him into a container of pre-chilled fresh water.

Had a small argument in the family as to fridge-ing her, and I unfortunately lost. We're going with the wait-and-see approach here, but her fin looks very different today and I want to verify that this is WORSE rather than a sign of healing I'm not familiar with, before I bring this up again.

The first one was how she looked yesterday (the injury occurred the day before I took it). The second (bloody one) was taken today.

Just keep her under observation during the healing process. Watch out for signs of fungus (kind of looks like cotton forming - if you see something questionable, just post a pic). Check over her tank to make sure there isn't anything she can "catch" that tear on and make it worse. Since the second one looks bloodier, she may have already caught it on something. She should heal okay without the fridge.

Fridging should rarely be necessary so you should be fine. If you want to be prepared, you could look out for a small, used dorm-sized fridge, they should becoming available about this time of year.

Keep us posted! ;)

It is clearly being aggravated by something in the tank, and I can almost guarantee it is that object behind her in the 1st picture. I have a feeling her cut is getting caught as she enters and exits that object, which appears to have somewhat sharp edges. Take that item out and replace it with a better hide. My Axolotl had a very similar injury and it healed just fine.

Here is an image of the cut about a week after it happened:

And now he is completely fine. You just need to take out any objects that would aggravate the injury.

I posted this seconds after Shannon....it's eery how similarly we think.

Lovely! I just pulled out that hide, and am still working on getting some plants in there to replace it. I'll keep her out of the fridge unless things get bad, and I'll post again first before making that decision.

Whew, you guys really eased my mind, I've been horribly worried over it. Thanks, again!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
