and there you go

Hi Harry
Congratulations on getting your axolotls.
Did you get them from a pet shop?

They look a decent weight but their gills look very bad.
Do you have any idea how old they are?

What size tank do you have them in and which one is it on the pictures.

You will need to make sure they have some hiding spots if you have the light on as they dont like light because they have no eyelids.

If you haven't already been to www.axolotl.org then i suggest you have a look through. There is a load of information on there.
But we're here to help if you have any questions.

Also please make sure you use a dechlorinator in your water. And not gravel for a substrate. I think those slate pieces may be a little rough on your axolotls bellies too.

Oh and almost as important....Welcome to the forum.. :D

hello , i bought them from paws for thought in leeds on wednesday , i am not quite sure how big the tank is , i have taken the slate out as it wasnt verry appealing so i am gunna get some gravle at the weekend , do you have any idea what is wrong with the gills , i have read that they will have smaller gills if the water is colder cos there is more oxygen present , is this true? and i am going to get some plumbing for them to hide in :)
and i am just using tap water streight from the tap , oops , but mi dad ha kept axys before and managed to breed them without dechlorinator but moved the eggs into rain water, would you suggest using water from a water butt outside ?

Hi,

Congratulations on being a new owner! I do hope you take some time to read over the site that Mel has provided as it will provide you lots of great information. I see that you plan on gravel - as Mel posted, this is not a good choice of substrate - sand, slate tiles, or even just bare bottom are better options. Gravel can and will be swallowed by axolotls so please avoid gravel larger than 1mm.

As for their gills, most likely they have been kept in very poor conditions. Axolotls actually need cool water to live in - 16-18 is optimal, but no higher than 24 ever. They like slow moving, clean water. Testing kits will be essential for ammonia, pH, nitrite/nitrate. Axolotls are very sensitive to ammonia and chlorine so a dechlorinator is a good idea if using tap water. Glad you are reading, keep up with the research and as Mel said, if you need us, we are here. Good luck!

the tank i have them in , i have decided this is only temporary as i am going to get a nice new glass one that is larger from my lfs.

i like the idea of slate tiles , i saw a tank on here with them on the floor and i liked the look of it so i may hold off with the gravel and just get a background for them.

do you have any ideas how i can get their gills a little larger or will they be fine with small gills

as for the water i think i will have to steal the water from my grans water butt,:L lol

if you could i would love to see some of your enclosures for your axys

i just hand fed them 2 blocks of frozen blood worm , it was well funny :D

Hey I'm from Leeds. I emailed that store lately and asked them is they had any in and they said they didn't :S

I want some very dark type, much like you have. I e-mailed admin@leedspetshops.co.uk and this is what I got back...
"Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your enquiry though I’m afraid we don’t have any of the type in at the moment.

Kind Regards
Mike"
Maybe they meant just the type I was after. I have some babies I am raising at the moment so I think I'll have a look when they are bigger.

they had some little ones in the tank next to it , but i think that they were already sold

Harry,
Congratulations on the new axies and welcome to the Forum!

Please, I am begging you, do not use gravel as a substrate. Axolotls end up ingesting the gravel as they are sucking in their food, and the ingested gravel leads to very serious health issues.

You will save you (and your axies) a great deal of stress by using sand or a bare bottom as a substrate.

Best of luck and keep us posted on their progress!

I really really want a very dark one like yours :(, I'll wait a month or two then I'll give them a ring.

hope you find some, they may have some in as new stuff comes in all the time

Which shop did you go to? Out of interest

the one on york road

Ah ok, well my guys are still pretty small so I'll wait till they are at least 3 inches long then I'll contact them.

Have you had a chance to read the link that melfly posted yet? The sooner you take charge of the water quality, the sooner their gills will improve, and the happier they'll be. Have a read through and let us know what questions you have.

would waterbutt water (rain water) be better for my axys than tap water , if i use it do you think that it will give my axyys bigger gills

The thing to watch with rain water is bacteria that can form in standing water. Rainwater would still need to be treated to be safe.

Keeping them at a constant temperature in stable conditions will help with the gills. I can't tell you to do any one thing to guarantee re-generation. This can vary from axolotl to axolotl. However, keeping them in a stable environment can only help them. As jclee said getting your water quality under control will be key.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
