HI, Just over a month a go, some may remember Pinky developed fungus on his Gills (See thread http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...8-sick-axolotl/68278-salt-baths-fridging.html. I gave him the necessary salt baths and fridged him until it was all cleared up.

Pinky returned to his tank about 2-3 weeks ago but ever since he went in the fridge he hasnt eaten anything. He used to have a great appetite and would happily snap up 5-7 worms a day. Ive tried feeding him earthworms and frozen bloodworm and he has not been interested at all. Getting concerned now that he'll starve himself to death if he doesnt eat soon. The tank temp is at 22c so he should be hungry.

Water perimeters are all fun, i do a test once a week and im pleased with the water quality. Any ideas on how to get my little blighter to eat?

Hi,

your water temperature is too high. Axies feel best at temps between 16-20 C. The high temp could be the reason why he won´t eat.

I agree with the temperature diagnosis, my tank's constantly sit at 19degree and my guys are always hungry, a few days ago they both hit 24! for 2 days and not one ate a thing.

Okay ill try to get the temperature down, for some reason i thought 25c was the highest acceptable level. To be honest its only gone past 20c this past week as the weather has been warm, normal temp for the tank has been 18/19c.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
