Hi my axolotyl has damage on his side and his back legs and bottom are swollen. His veins are visible all over his body. I have put him in a small tank in a fridge. I think he may have been bullied by my other axolotyls.

Is the fridge the best place and is there anything else I should be doing?

Thanks

I am sorry , but you need to take your axolotl to the vet as soon as possible. I would strongly advise against home treatment as the wound is large, and the swelling and discolour looks like infection.

If you don't have a decent vet for amphibians a good treatment to try would be Furan 2 if available. It treats gram positive and gram negative bacteria and fungus. It is a almost a "cure all" and is a decent shotgun approach.

It looks like your axolotl had a wound and infection set in. They have great healing ability but it is rough looking.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
