Hello all, Mulder laid a load of eggs on Friday. I look at them now and see 5 or 6 that are out of shape so I assume those are infertile. of the rest I have some dark brown, some grey/cloudy and some black with white spots, all of these still have a spherical shape.

Am I right in thinking the grey/cloudy eggs are infertile also?

I usually wait a few days until I see a little bit of development within the axolotl eggs. When they develop, you can see more easily which ones are infertile and not growing compared to the ones that are rapidly changing. Unless it is absolutely clear that the egg is in fact cloudy, I would keep them in until you are sure :D

PS: I have attached a photo of my axolotl eggs when Charles and Emma had babies. You can definitely see how cloudy they are compared to the rest and how they did not grow.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
