I have an albino (No colour at all) axolotl who normally has vivid ink gills. However, today I have noticed that they are almost colourless. There are tiny specks of colour at the ends of some of the gills but most are white. Any suggestions as to what is going on?

When my two axolotls have been just chilling for a long time, their gills tends to get pale. As soon they get a little active again they brighten up right away. I have two leucestic :) Hope this helped

Thanks for the help. What do you reckon is the longest they've been without colour?

Well it depends on for how long they want to chill. But i suppose that if you look at them on night time, or under feeding time you should see them get red. If they dosent i suppose you have a problem. Im not too experienced but im pretty sure that some of the other wise members can help you :)

yeah totally normal,

When they're dormant or sleeping they will go pale, as soon as they go for a swim or get excited about food they soon redden up.

You gotta remember the filaments work by pumping blood through them to oxygenate the blood so when heartrate is slow gills are pale.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
