hi! im new to owning a salamander, it was a xmas present for my son, but the whole family loves this little guy!

my mom bought this for my son, she got it at the mall. it came in a tiny cage and still had its gills, it was very thin. i dont know anything about salamanders but after doing some research i fed him feeder fish, he ate a ton, he started changing, he is now in a land only tank with a large soaking bowl, he hasnt eaten since we switched the tank around, i tried giving him crickets, but i read that sometimes they dont eat while or right after they change? anyway, i think he is doing okay...i have him in soil, it looks dry in the pic but i keep it moist, that was right after we changed him over. here are some pics:)

Welcome to the forum! You can try feeding it night crawlers, I haven't met a salamander yet that will refuse them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
