Sick? I'm not sure?

My leucistic axolotl has developed something a bit odd with her gills. Several of the 'filaments' are darker than the others around them and look swollen or inflamed. She still eats like a pig and her activity level hasn't changed just this gill thing.

I can get pictures if needed. The tank is a 20 gallon long with a 30 gallon filter w/ spray bar. Diet is primarily bloodworms. He lives alone in the tank.
 
Please put a picture with it so we can see what you mean.
And what are the water meters? Temp of the tank and all?

When your axolotl is resting or sleeping, do the gills go pale? If so, do these spots go pale as well?They look like they're branches of the blood vessels, rather than inflammed.

I've seen this before, on a wildtype axolotl, and I don't think it was something that was of much concern. But it's definitely something to keep an eye on.
 
He was pretty at rest in those pictures. No matter how pale the rest of his gills get they don't get any paler.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
